Antonius & Hieronymus Amati Cremona 1607

Brothers Amati decorated viola

Brothers Amati viola

Amati Quartet in Residence, established at the University of Saskatchewan. Formerly known as the Cole Quartet—performing on the rare and irreplaceable Amati collection—Amati Quartet member Geoff Cole shows the illustration work on the back of the rare viola he plays,
made in 1607 by the Brothers Amati.

-The Brothers Amati also made one of the violins in the University collection. It is dated 1627.
-Nicolaus Amati, son of Hieronymus, made the quartet's other violin, in 1637.
-Completing the set is the cello, made in 1690 by Hieronymus II, Nicolaus' son, the last of the Amati family to make instruments of note.

The instruments, one of only three such sets known to exist in the world, the other two are in the United States.
